Summer is here again and for many it provides relief from the dry part of eczema, exposed skin. There are things that may be problematic, but if we know what to look for, it may make the summer a little easier on sensitive baby skin.
Sunflowers for eczema
We all know the importance of using sunscreens especially in infants, but it is often difficult to find a sunscreen that does not make eczema worse.
There are 2 types of sunscreen, chemical and mineral.
Chemical sunscreens - These contain a number of chemicals that are absorbed into the skin to protect you from harmful rays from the sun. These are most of the commonly available sunscreens because they are absorbed in the skin. These types of cream can cause problems for sensitive eczema.
Mineral sunscreens - (those containing things like zinc or titanium oxide) form a barrier to the skin. These are more commonly found in natural sunscreens or preparations for sensitive skin. These creams may be a bit harder to apply, and as they sit on the skin, a white gloss may appear that some people may not like. Examples of mineral based creams are Badger and Lavera Sun creams.
Combination Creams - A mixture of chemical absorbers and mineral screens.
Again, as with everything to find a sunscreen that fits your childs skin, try and wrong, there is often a problem that many sunscreens contain detergents like SLS to mix the oil and the water into a cream, perfumes and preservatives that can also cause reactions in Sensitive Skin. Natural creams may contain ingredients unsuitable for children with allergies, so it is important to check labels. We found success with Badger Sun cream last year, it is very natural and contains no preservatives or cleaning agents, it was good for my little and very moisturizing, but it leaves lots of white blobs. Jason Sun cream and Lavera products worked well for us too. It is possible that your doctor or dermatologist can advise or give a prescription for a sunscreen that they consider appropriate for your child, so it is also worth checking out.
Swimming and sand
Even young children love water and I think more than any parent we feel the conflict wants to protect sensitive children yet let them do all things children love and enjoy.
Paddling pools in the shade are good for hot days. If your child has very sensitive skin, you can also use his sun cream on siblings and friends so much of the cream ends up in the pool water. Swimming pools for most of the eczema diseases are alright, you may think you need to use moisturizer before and after and always shower the skin with fresh water as you leave the pool. Cooler pools often contain less chlorine than warmer pools.
Sea water is very salty, so it may be open or very inflamed eczema so be careful first, if tolerated, be sure to rinse your skin well after paddling and moisten well. Sand gets everywhere and on a well-damped and sun-creamy baby it can be impossible to get rid of without much rinse. If your little love is true, try to make sure the cream is applied for a while before coming close to it. If the skin is not open or very cracked it should not be too problematic, but be careful if the skin cries open it can be very annoying, stubborn and problematic to remove.
Many of us know how the heat can make our children feel dizzy and on hot days it can be hard to keep cool. Eczema can be aggravated by sweating so that skin shrinkage on the inside of the elbows or behind the knees may become inflamed sore and itchy. If you find this is the case with your eczema baby, then bathing the areas with intervals threw the day with damp cotton wool before applying their moisturizer can help keep them more comfortable.
Lightweight cotton fabrics are ideal for warm weather. If you find small ones that get hot and itchy while traveling, try terry tariffs that can enter buggies and car seats to absorb moisture. Im sure a clean towel in a buggy would do the same. As with some young children try and keep them in the shade possible and out of the midday sun. Summer is a joyful time for children and their parents, with some thought and preparation, you should be able to enjoy the warm and sunny days with your little ones.
